Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL) and Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) are happy to announce a Winter School in Economics
and Finance to be held at IGIDR, Goregaon East, Mumbai from December 12 to December
The five day program comprises research-oriented sessions on selected topics in
economics and finance. Each day will feature two sessions, one in the morning and
one in the afternoon, led by a top scholar. The focus is new and high impact research
on selected topics. A tentative list of speakers includes Professors Abhijit Banerjee
(MIT), Debopam Bhattacharya (Oxford), Esther Duflo (MIT), Ed Glaeser (Harvard),
Ravi Jagannathan (Northwestern), Aprajit Mahajan (Berkeley), Manju Puri (Duke) and
Raghuram Rajan (RBI). The topics will cover areas such as asset pricing, behavioural
economics, crises, development economics, econometrics, financial intermediation,
microeconomic theory, macroeconomics, and trade.
We invite applications to attend the winter school from Indian students currently
enrolled full time in the second year of masters programs and who intend to pursue
doctoral studies in economics or finance. We will also consider those in the early
stages (first or second year) of doctoral studies in these fields. We seek highly
qualified applicants with a history of scholarly accomplishment as well as motivation
and aptitude for research.
How to Apply

The application package should include
- A one page CV with complete academic history from higher secondary until current
education in progress including any awards, honours, or distinctions for academic
accomplishment. We will require certified copies of transcripts prior to final selection.
- CV should contain email, phone and postal contact information.
- A one page Statement of Purpose (SOP, not more than 500 words).
- A scanned copy of latest photo.
- Names of two faculty who have recently taught you and are willing to serve as references.
- A sample of original research writing, if any.
Selected outstation students A travel grant not exceeding third class AC round trip rail fare from current residence. Subject to availability, hostel accommodation on IGIDR campus.
Local students An allowance to defray local travel expenses.
Candidates will be selected based on academic accomplishment and potential for research.
Selected candidates will be contacted by the selection committee. No further communications
in this regard will be entertained. The organising committee reserves the right
to reject any or all candidates without assigning any reason.
